Wedding Photography Second Shooter & Associate | Karl Chester
If you’re looking for an experienced wedding photography second shooter, assistant or associate photographer, you’ve landed in the right place.
Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside some incredibly talented wedding photographers across the UK.
From luxury country house weddings to registry office ceremonies, barn weddings, city-centre celebrations and everything in between, I’ve spent years helping other photographers deliver the best possible experience for their couples.
Second shooting is something I’ve always genuinely enjoyed. It gives me the opportunity to work alongside talented photographers, experience different approaches to wedding photography, and focus on what I love most — documenting people and moments as they naturally unfold.
Many of the photographers I work with book me repeatedly, which I hope says as much about my approach to weddings as it does about the photographs I deliver.
Whether you need someone to cover groom preparations, capture candid guest interactions, assist with lighting, shoot group photographs, cover cocktail hour, or simply provide reliable support throughout the day, I’d love to help.
More Than Just an Extra Camera
I really enjoy second shooting.
For me, it’s not about simply turning up for the cash. It’s about becoming part of your team for the day and helping create the strongest possible set of images.
I understand that every photographer works differently — sometimes vastly differently.
Some photographers want a second shooter who can work independently and anticipate moments before they happen. Others prefer someone who follows a specific brief throughout the day.
I’m comfortable with both.
Whether you need me to quietly document moments as they happen, organise group photographs, help with lighting, carry gear, assist with timelines, or simply be another pair of experienced eyes throughout the day, I’m happy to help.
One of the things I enjoy most about second shooting is adapting to the lead photographer’s approach and becoming an extension of their brand for the day.
Your clients are your clients.
Your reputation is your reputation.
My job is to support you and help deliver the best possible experience for your couple.
Experience Across the UK
I’ve travelled all over the country photographing weddings.
From intimate registry office ceremonies with just a handful of guests to large multi-day celebrations, I’ve been lucky enough to experience an incredible variety of weddings and venues.
As long as the logistics make sense, I’m always happy to travel.
I’ve worked in grand country houses, converted mills, castles, stately homes, barns, industrial city venues, village halls and everything in between.
The venue rarely matters.
The people always do.
Photographers I’ve Worked Alongside
I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside some fantastic photographers over the years, many of whom have become good friends.
Photographers and studios I’ve worked with include:
- The Mateers (Patrick & Hollie Mateer)
- Rachel Joyce
- Neil Ridley
- Electric Blue Photography
- Rachel Burt
- Bomknights
- KMGS Photography
- Claire Penn
- Adam Joe Roberts
- Matt Godman

- Greg Bower
- The Wedding Guy Cheshire
- Embee Photography
- Babs Boardwell
…and many others throughout the UK.
The Mateers, who are among the UK’s most respected documentary wedding photographers and multiple This is Reportage award winners, have trusted me both as a second shooter and associate photographer on numerous occasions.
Being trusted by photographers whose work I admire has always meant a great deal to me.
What Photographers Say
Over the years I’ve been fortunate enough to work alongside some brilliant photographers. Here’s what a few of them have had to say.
“Karl has to be one of my favourite second photographers and over the past few years he has worked with me at many, many weddings.
My couples always comment on how lovely he is. He works super hard all day, is always really helpful, provides excellent chats during our downtime and absolutely delivers the goods when it comes to his images.
Always a pleasure to have him on my team for the day.”
Rachel Joyce
“Karl is an excellent second shooter! I end up with my biggest and best galleries whenever Karl second shoots; there are always so many good shots.
He seems to notice all of the little touches between people, tiny moments that many wouldn’t see, telling mini stories of the guests within the wedding.
He can handle any lighting situation perfectly. You could throw him in a tiny dark room and he would still take excellent photos.
He’s also an easy-going, genuinely nice guy to have around at a wedding.
Highly recommended!”
Kat, KMGS Photography
“Karl has second shot for us many times over the years and always does an excellent job.
He is extremely professional and works hard, but is also a relaxed and friendly presence to have with you on a wedding day.
Definitely recommended to anyone looking for a second shooter.”
Patrick Mateer, The Mateers
What I Can Help With
Documentary & Candid Photography
Natural moments are where I feel most at home.
I can confidently cover:
- Guest interactions
- Ceremony reactions
- Cocktail hour
- Dance floors
- Morning preparations
- Behind-the-scenes moments
- Storytelling details
Many photographers hire me specifically for candid coverage because I genuinely enjoy hunting for those small interactions and fleeting moments that help tell a fuller story of the day.
Portraits
Need me to take a couple away for ten minutes while you’re covering something else?
No problem.
I’m comfortable directing lightly and creating relaxed portraits while maintaining consistency with your style and approach.
Group Photographs
I know not every photographer enjoys organising family groups.
If required, I’m perfectly happy taking charge of group photographs and helping keep things moving efficiently and professionally.
Flash & Evening Coverage
I’m experienced using off-camera flash and comfortable assisting with lighting setups or independently covering evening celebrations.
Whether it’s a dark dance floor, a candlelit barn or a reception room with challenging mixed lighting, I’m confident working in demanding conditions.
Professional Equipment & Backup
I’ve always believed that people book photographers rather than camera equipment, but having reliable backup gear matters.
I arrive fully prepared for whatever a wedding day throws at us.
Camera Bodies
- 2 × Sony A9
- 2 × Sony A7III
Lenses
- Sony 35mm f/1.8
- Sony 55mm f/1.8 Zeiss
- Sony 85mm f/1.8
- Samyang 18mm
- Samyang 24mm
Lighting
Plus plenty of batteries, memory cards, storage and backups.
Professional & Insured
- Fully insured
- Own transport
- Happy travelling nationwide
- Comfortable with long wedding days
- Reliable and punctual
- Professionally presented
- Experienced representing another photographer’s brand
I understand that when I arrive at a wedding, I’m representing your business as much as my own.
Professionalism matters.
Why Photographers Rebook Me
The feedback I receive most often is that I’m easy to work with.
I’m approachable, adaptable and know when to step forward and when to step back.
I know how to work around videographers, celebrants, venue coordinators and suppliers without getting in anyone’s way.
I understand wedding etiquette.
I understand teamwork.
Most importantly, I understand that the day isn’t about me.
It’s about helping another photographer deliver their best work and ensuring their couple has an incredible experience.
